Stephen

Stephen
(first century)
   Saint and Martyr.
Stephen was one of the seven Deacons listed in the Acts of the Apostles. He debated with Jewish officials with the result that he was taken out of the city of Jerusalem and was stoned to death. Scholars debate whether his execution was sanctioned by the authorities or whether it was a public lynching. Paul was present and witnessed his death. According to eusebius of caesarea, he was the first Christian martyr and his feast is celebrated on 26 December, the day after Christmas.
